Anniversary Update: How HISD Has Changed in Two Years

June 1st marks the two-year anniversary of the Texas Education Agency’s intervention in Houston ISD and also the third year of Mike Miles’ role as superintendent. To mark this occasion, Superintendent Miles shared a video message reflecting on the district’s progress and the future being built together for HISD students.

He began by thanking families for trusting the district with their children’s education and emphasized HISD’s commitment to providing every student, especially those with special needs, the quality education they deserve. “Thank you for trusting HISD with your children everyday and charging us with their education,” he stated.

Superintendent Miles highlighted five key areas of progress over the past two years:

  1. Closing the achievement gap
  2. Highest student growth in HISD history on the STAAR test
  3. Improved student experiences, including:
  • 13,700 extracurricular classes offered across all schools
  • Nearly 2,000 students traveled nationally and internationally for educational opportunities
  1. Increased teacher and principal effectiveness
  • Improved pay and support led to higher retention

“We’re proud of paying them more and supporting them and this will continue in HISD,” Miles added.

  1. Improved district financial health
  • Budget deficit reduced from $250 million to $60 million

Miles also noted that HISD now has no multi-year D or F campuses, and the school board is focusing on student outcomes and good governance. He closed his message with optimism, saying, “We are going to close this school year strong and we’re gonna run through the finish.”
