HISD Students Shine at 2025 Art Car Parade with Creative and Collaborative Projects

This year, students from the Houston Independent School District (HISD) made a spectacular impression at the 2025 Art Car Parade, with over 25 district schools participating. Among the standout entries was Red Elementary’s “Reading Rainbow Dragon” art car, which captured the community’s imagination. Designed with holographic CDs for scales and a motorized rainbow dragon’s tail, the car was a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of its young creators. Led by art teacher Devin Venters, the hands-on project allowed students from kindergarten through fifth grade to collaborate, learning invaluable life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and self-reliance.

At Washington High School, the “Full Bloom” art car took a different approach, reflecting the school’s recent community initiatives. Featuring vibrant mosaics, live plants, and a papier-mâché statue of Booker T. Washington, the car symbolized the school’s commitment to both academic excellence and community building. Meanwhile, at Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center, students drew inspiration from Salvador Dali’s surrealist art, dedicating hundreds of hours to creating intricate designs that transformed their car into a mobile masterpiece. Art teacher Kerrianne Clabaugh emphasized the importance of community engagement, offering students an opportunity to express their creativity beyond the classroom, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

The HISD’s participation in the Art Car Parade goes beyond creative expression—it serves as an invaluable educational experience. Students gain hands-on experience in collaboration, problem-solving, and community engagement as they transform everyday materials into art. Whether it’s bringing a rainbow dragon to life or crafting a tribute to resilience, HISD students continue to demonstrate that the arts are not just a form of self-expression but a powerful tool for personal growth and collective impact.
