HISD Students Learn To Make Delicious Rice Balls Thanks To HISD’s Japanese Food Exposure Program

Delving into new cultures is a cornerstone of education, and HISD’s Japanese Food Exposure program is bringing the flavors and traditions of Japan straight to students’ plates. With the generous support of HISD Nutrition, HISD Dyad Travel, HISD Foundation, HISD Family and Community Engagement (FACE), and the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH), students are immersing themselves in Japanese cuisine and culture.

This unique initiative not only introduces students to the culinary delights of Japan but also serves as a stepping stone for their upcoming 5-day journey to Japan. The program offers a taste of what’s to come, preparing students for the rich experiences that await them abroad.

One of the highlights of the Japanese Food Exposure program was a hands-on lesson in making traditional Japanese rice balls, known as onigiri or omusubi. Students learned the art of shaping and filling these delicious rice treats, gaining insight into Japanese cooking techniques and cultural practices.

The collaboration between HISD and its partners underscores the district’s commitment to providing students with diverse learning opportunities beyond the classroom. By engaging with Japanese cuisine and culture, students not only expand their culinary horizons but also develop a deeper appreciation for global traditions and customs.

As students eagerly anticipate their journey to Japan, the Japanese Food Exposure program continues to inspire curiosity, cultural awareness, and a sense of adventure among HISD students. We look forward to following their journey and celebrating their experiences as they embark on this exciting adventure abroad.
