As the Houston ISD Community Advisory Committee continues to work with district stakeholders on finalizing the 2024 district bond proposal,  area media outlets have been invited to tour some of the campuses in urgent need of repairs and safety improvements.

Bond funds are needed for restoration and rebuilds on numerous campuses, and the reporters will have access to see the poor conditions first hand. Those schools being visited are as follows:

  • Revere Middle School: 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Fondren Middle School: 11:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m.
  • Cornelius Elementary School: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Bond funds needed

The portions of the funds for campus repairs and improvements that are part of the “Renew HISD” are for the following needs:

  • Security fencing
  • Secure single point of entry
  • Secure classroom doors
  • Cooling and heating improvements
  • Clean air and water

The proposals for the $4.4 billion 2024 bond program are as follows:

  • $1.35 billion for improved infrastructure
  • $2.05 billion for urgent facility needs for 40 plus district campuses
  • $1 billion for technology upgrades

The district bond presentation shows that other large Houston area public school districts, including Cypress Fairbanks, Katy and Conroe have all recently passed bond proposals over $4 billion.

The district presentation emphasized that no additional taxes would be required to fund the bond loan.
