Congratulations, Fleming! Parents Express Optimism For NES, As The School Aims For An A-Grade

As Fleming Middle School begins its second year under the New Education System (NES), parents are excited and optimistic about the new school year.

KPRC 2 News spoke with teachers and parents to find out how they’re coping with the changes brought on by the NES. At a warm welcome event, one volunteer expressed his excitement.

“We are just excited for all of the students and parents,” the volunteer told KPRC 2. “It’s so important to let these young people know that they have support, and we are cheering for them for the school year and in life.”

When the news outlet asked parents about their expectations regarding NES, they expressed having previous experience with the system.

“I’ve been sitting it on the news and we’re ecstatic,” a parent said. “We just want this to happen, and I know we’re going to have success.”

The NES was launched at underperforming campuses across HISD in 2023. The system aims to improve academic performance and ensure students are prepared for the modern workplace.

Under NES, Fleming went from benign to an A-rated school to a B-rated campus. However, Principal Deven Adams said he is now aiming for an A.

“Our internal calculations project us to be a B-rated campus this year,” Adams said. “We medaled with silver, but I want to go for gold. I want that A, and this (he shows a gold medal) serves as a physical reminder to all our staff that we have work to do, and we’re in it together.”

Teachers also expressed their commitment to make Fleming an A-graded campus.

“I’m putting a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this,” said Ms. Januel Plumber, a teacher at Fleming. “I really do want us to be an A or as close to an A as possible. Last year, a lot of people were scared and anxious, ready to quit before we started because we didn’t know what to expect. We quickly learned that wasn’t the case, and now we’re more focused and determined than ever.”
