In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) celebrated the legacy of the civil rights leader with the 29th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition Finals. During the event, students delivered powerful speeches that highlighted Dr. King’s lasting impact on society, emphasizing the importance of equality, justice, and service to others.
The oratory competition provided a platform for HISD students to express their thoughts and reflections on Dr. King’s vision of a just and united world. Each finalist presented a unique and inspiring message, sharing their perspectives on how Dr. King’s work continues to inspire action today. This close and supportive environment was evident as students were embraced by their parents and family members.
“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”— Martin Luther King Jr.
A notable moment of the event was the crowning of Montoia Murray, who made history as the first-ever two-time champion of the competition. Montoia’s heartfelt and compelling speech earned her the top honor once again, marking a remarkable achievement in the history of the oratory competition.
