HISD Seeks Experienced Educators for Principal Apprentice Role in 2025–2026

Houston Independent School District (HISD) is now accepting applications for the 2025–2026 Principal Academy cohort, an intensive, one-year program designed to prepare aspiring principals to lead schools across the district.

The Principal Academy offers a unique combination of in-house training through the Leadership and Professional Development department and on-campus mentorship under an experienced principal. The position, known as Principal Apprentice, is a full-time, 12-month role located at Hattie Mae White and comes with a starting salary of $100,000.

The program is designed for educators with a strong background in teaching and school leadership who are ready to make a lasting impact in a transformation district. Apprentices will be involved in school improvement planning, classroom observation and instructional feedback, student support, and parent engagement. Additional responsibilities include administrative tasks such as budgeting and scheduling, as well as participation in district-wide initiatives.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree and a valid Texas Principal certification. A minimum of two to three years of experience in an administrative role—such as principal, assistant principal, or dean of instruction—is required, along with at least two years of exemplary teaching or equivalent leadership experience.

Core Requirements:

  • Master’s degree
  • Valid Texas Principal certification
  • 2-3 years of administrative experience as Principal, Assistant Principal, or Dean of Instruction required
  • At least two years of exemplary teaching or comparable leadership experience is essential
  • Additional leadership experience on the campus or otherwise is essential.
  • Communicates, collaborates, and builds strong relationships with key stakeholders including:
    • Teachers and staff
    • Students and parents
    • Community and business partners
    • Other members of the school and district community
    • Selects and mentors a high-quality school staff 
    • Develops and maintains quality data, a balanced budget, and operational systems control closely tied to instructional priorities

The Principal Apprentice role is designed to foster a new generation of school leaders who embody the district’s core values and are prepared to implement the HISD Characteristics and Year 2035 Competencies.
