HISD Conditions Update

Dear HISD Community,

HISD teams are working to assess and repair damage from the storm yesterday evening. Crews worked through the night, and that work is continuing today. Below is an update on conditions across the District.

At this time, we can report:

  • 136 HISD campuses are still without power. We do not have an estimate of when the power will be restored.
  • Dozens of campuses sustained wind and tree damage. The clean-up process is underway.
  • A handful of campuses sustained more extensive damage. Superintendent Miles is visiting Robinson, Paige, Sinclair, and Pugh Elementary Schools today to evaluate the extent of the damage to those campuses and establish a plan for their school operations next week.
  • HISD’s goal is to have every student safely back in the classroom on Monday. If necessary, students whose buildings have more extensive damage may attend school at an alternative location while the damage is being repaired. We will communicate with any impacted school communities directly over the weekend.
  • The most pressing issue is the widespread power outages. We are working with CenterPoint and City and County officials to ensure we are able to safely serve our students on Monday.
  • Two Westside High School students were injured when their bus was stuck in the storm on the Hardy Toll Road. Both students are home and recovering. Currently, we are not aware of any other injuries involving HISD students or staff.
  • HISD has postponed the Educators of the Year event scheduled for this evening. We will share a new date for the event as soon as possible.

HISD will provide another update on conditions later this afternoon. Thank you, and please be safe.
