HISD Plans To Expand CTE Programs With New Partnerships And Proposed Bond

More local businesses and colleagues are partnering with Houston ISD to expand its Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

If the “Renew HISD” bond passes in November, it will add three new CTE centers, one for each division, and would implement renovations at Barbara Jordan Career Center in the HISD north division. In addition, the bond would expand CTE program offerings with additional new partnerships.

Some of the current partners include companies such as CenterPoint Energy, BridgeYear, and Vaughn Construction. In addition, there are higher education partners like the University of Houston and federal departments such as the United States Department of Agriculture.

CTE programs would be focused on architecture and construction, health sciences, manufacturing, information technology, and transportation logistics.

Superintendent Mike Miles told the board of managers during a July 16 board workshop that the new CTE centers would be key to the district’s focus on getting students ready for careers of the future. With the centers, HISD is trying to prepare students for high skill and high demand jobs in Houston.

The new CTE centers are expected to cost $375 million in total. $125 million would be allocated to the construction of each new CTE center. The centers would be built in the south, west, and central divisions of the district. The bond, if approved, would also provide $50 million for renovations at Barbara Jordan Career Center, which is currently the only established CTE center in the district.

One center would be built near Jane Long Academy in the west division of the district, while the other two CTE centers would be built at former locations of closed elementary schools.

Each center is expected to have a capacity of 1,200 to 1,400 students. This is double the current capacity of the Barbara Jordan Career Center.
