Students from Sterling High School and Jack Yates High School in Houston recently took part in a special boat tour at Port Houston, as an HISD X post explained. The experience was designed to help them learn more about maritime careers and what it’s like to work in this growing industry. During the tour, students got a close look at how one of the busiest ports in the country operates and were introduced to career options in fields like shipping, logistics, and engineering.
This kind of hands-on experience is part of a broader effort to expose young people to real-world job opportunities they might not learn about in a regular classroom. By seeing the daily work at the port and meeting professionals in the field, students gained a better understanding of what skills and training are needed for maritime careers. It also gave them a chance to consider how their education now can connect to future jobs in high-demand areas.
The boat tour was made possible with the support of Houston City Councilmember Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, the Seafarers International Union, and Kirby Corporation. Their involvement shows how local leaders, labor organizations, and businesses are working together to help students explore solid career paths. Their support reflects a strong community commitment to building a future workforce that is informed, prepared, and inspired.
