In the heart of Houston’s East End, one elementary school dance teacher has turned a bare classroom into a space where movement, imagination, and Beyoncé-inspired choreography come to life. Amber Ferguson, a dance instructor at Marshall Elementary School in Houston ISD (HISD), has built an award-winning dance program from the ground up, literally.
With no mirrors, no ballet bars, and no traditional studio, Ferguson transformed an empty room into a makeshift dance floor. Her vision, determination, and passion for the arts have since propelled her students into the spotlight. Their recent spring production, Cowboy Marshall, wowed audiences with bold choreography, themed costumes, and music inspired by Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album.
Ferguson’s work demonstrates that the power of the arts doesn’t depend on perfect facilities, but on passion, purpose, and perseverance. Under her leadership, the dance program has become a point of pride for Marshall Elementary, offering students a chance to build confidence, discipline, and creative expression.
