Research Shows Back-to-School Routines Have Many Benefits For Children

School is back in session, and education research shows that children benefit from having daily routines, which makes children feel safer and happier, which often leads to better behavior and cooperation.

That research shows that when they know what to expect, and what’s expected of them, kids feel more comfortable and confident about what lies ahead.

Why are routines and schedules important?

School year routines can help children develop relationships, gain a sense of belonging, and build self-confidence. As children grow, routines can help them learn independence and adjust to change more easily.

The research shows four key benefits of following routines:

  • Stability: Children who know what to expect each day are more likely to feel a sense of stability, even during major family changes such as divorce, death, relocation, or changes in household composition.
  • Predictability: Predictable environments can help promote social and emotional development and prevent challenging behaviors.
  • Learning: Routines provide opportunities for children to learn more about themselves, the world, and others.
  • Positive interactions: Ongoing and positive interactions between adults and children can be important for development.

Routines for preschool-age children are also beneficial

Psychological studies show that when infants and toddlers are part of familiar activities and routines, they develop relationships with the people they interact with and gain a sense of belonging and self-confidence.

As older toddlers and young children grow, they can follow routines, demonstrate emerging independence, and adjust to change more easily.
